To prepare girls for the workforce, we must equip them with the tools to enter male-dominated industries. The trades can offer women access to economic security, as they typically do not require a college degree, are accessible through apprenticeships, and typically have strong unions that provide good pay and benefits. As reported by The Institute for Women’s Policy Research, in 2021 women made up only 11% of the construction sector, and only 8.6% of construction managers were women. Women are less likely to complete their apprenticeships because they are less likely to be promoted to field leadership positions or receive the same on-the-job technical training as men. By providing girls with a head start through hands-on exploratory workshops, networking opportunities, and direct mentorship, we seek to equip girls with the knowledge and skillset to navigate the industry and enter apprenticeships with the confidence, determination, and experience to succeed.
